TOWER OF BABEL LIGHT
The Tower of Babel light is an interpretation of the mythology surrounding the birth of languages.
During the creation of the world, God (referred to as “the word”) creates light. Thus, language creates light, and this idea was focused on by many philosophers as language and the power of communication enlightens human society. But what happened when that same humanity, a humanity speaking the exact same language, tried to go as high as the heavens, and as high as God’s splendor? God obfuscated their speech, and they all began to speak different languages.
This myth of the birth of languages does not speak of divine punishment as much as it does about the birth of one of humanity’s most valuable treasures: its numerous languages.
We have transfigured the light of each language into modulars, piled atop one another forming a modular tower. Crafted by some of the best French light engineers, this piece of design is a dedication to one of the most inspiring myths from the Old Testament: a prayer for a torn apart humanity to remember the beauty of each culture.
Inspired by architecture, the Tower of Babel lamp is a modular system. It can be displayed as a simple module, on the ground, on a table, against a wall. With its base, it becomes a tower of light which heights depends on the number of units a person wants to stack.
The Tower of Babel consists of an aluminum structure, an LED lighting system, an alabaster diffusing shade and a solid, polished aged bronze ring shade. The electrical transformer is hidden inside of the modular. It allows the connection to be made at any module.
